The Hyde Park Youth Symphony (HPYS) announces the departure of Artistic Director Matthew Sheppard, who will conclude his tenure with the organization after 11 years of transformative leadership. This departure, part of a year-long transition process for HPYS, comes as Sheppard prepares to embark on new artistic roles and professional opportunities.

“Matthew’s impact on HPYS cannot be overstated,” said Radiah Smith-Donald, Co-President of the HPYS Board of Directors. “Over the last 11 years, his talent, charisma, and dedication have enabled HPYS students to have exceptional ensemble experiences and grow as musicians. Matthew’s vision has shaped the sound and soul of the Hyde Park Youth Symphony. While we will miss his presence on the podium, we are excited to follow his career and incredibly grateful to have been a part of it.”
Reflecting on a Decade of Leadership
Since joining HPYS, Sheppard has been instrumental in elevating the organization’s musical standards and expanding its reach to youth musicians beyond Hyde Park. He is popular among students and audience members alike and significantly expanded the HPYS repertoire to include both classical masterpieces and works by diverse, contemporary composers. As Artistic Director, Sheppard leads the flagship Youth Symphony ensemble, and has also been responsible for recruiting talented conductors for the younger ensembles ensuring that quality performance experiences start early at HPYS.
The Board of Directors has opened the search for a new Artistic Director in preparation for the 2026-27 season, and is committed to appointing a leader who will work with HPYS to nurture students’ artistry and their love of sharing music. The transition comes at a milestone moment for the organization as HPYS celebrates its 70th anniversary and also welcomes a new Executive Director.
